The client is a UK Chef who is publishing his own pastry cookbook, and he would like his book to not only be a recipe book, but reflect things about himself.
The project needed to incorporate the following elements: fun, playful illustrations, hand-lettering, be reflective of the chef's origins, and entice people to experiment with the art of pastry!
The front cover of the cookbook incorporates part of the UK flag, where the Chef resides. To create the feeling that the cookbook was fun and lively, a caricature was made of the chef holding trays of pastries! I also designed some line icons of various kitchen utensils that would be used in pastry making.
The back cover includes a photo of the Chef (mock) along with a synopsis of the author and his love of baking.
To ensure continuity throughout the cookbook, pages would all have fun illustrations that would also somehow tie to the theme of the pages.
The table of contents features two kitchen mice, helping to begin creating some pastries of their own! Again, hand-lettering is featured on main titles, which also accentuates the hand illustrations.
Each recipe page would feature a photographed version of the recipe. The recipes would be labeled easy, medium or hard with the colored flags, along with prep times and of course, eating times!
On the sample page, there are illustrated blueberries spilling from the photograph, and the illustrated bear is ready to help mix in the bowl of blueberries...if you dare to take them from him!
